I wouldn't say SAM was used mainly for Spectrum emulation - it's a compatibility feature, but SAM users run native software. It's certainly the easiest and most used emulation though!

The C64 is a bit too complex for full emulation, but it would be nice to have something that boots as far as the bootup screen, and lets you use BASIC.

It's much more likely I'll do a VIC-20 emulator, which is effectively a cut-down C64 without the sprites and other fancy hardware. I do already have something that boots the VIC-20 ROMs as far as the command prompt, but there's no display emulation yet. Peeking memory also shows the boot message in the right place, and the border colour does change show the boot has finished.

being that the SAM was used mostly as a spectrum emulator, wouldn't it be rebelliously cool to write a C64 emulator on it? :)

not that i want to distract you from any normal projects or anything....
